Newmarket & Surrounding Town's Water Info

Every town has its own way of getting water. This means the problems with your water mainly depend on what township you are in. Below is a list of towns in the Toronto area. Find your town and see what your water is like.

Acton
Municipal water is 15 to 18 grains hard. Recommend a softener and carbon filtration to remove chlorine.

Alton
Town water in 12 to 14 grains hard. Recommend a softener and a carbon filter for chlorine removal.

Aurora
City water is 15 grains hard. Recommend a softener and a carbon filter for chlorine removal.

Bolton
Most of Bolton is now on the Brampton water supply (Lake Ontario). Recommend carbon filtration or reverse osmosis to remove trace contaminants. Hardness is 8 grains. A softener is a nice luxury but not a necessity.

Brampton
Lake Ontario water: 8 grains hard. Heavily chlorinated. Periodic problems with algae. Recommend carbon filtration for chlorine and algae removal. May be combined with softening.

Caledon
Village of Caledon: Water is 17 grains hard. Recommend softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal. Private wells: May encounter iron, sulphur and small pockets of petroleum in the Caledon area. Water should be analysed.

Caledon East
Water is 15 grains hard. Historical problem with nitrates in the water. Recommend softener, possibly with anion resin or reverse osmosis to eliminate any possibility of nitrates. Private wells in the area: water should be analysed for nitrates, bacteria, iron or sulphur.

Erin
Water is 14 to 17 grains hard. Recommend softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal. Private wells in the area may encounter iron, sulphur, and pockets of natural gas.

Georgetown
Georgetown water is 20 to 25 grains hard. Very hard and heavily chlorinated. Recommend softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal. Private wells in the area frequently encounter iron and sulphur.

Halton Hills
Halton Hills, which includes Georgetown, Acton, Milton, and surrounding area, uses mostly ground water. Private wells frequently encounter iron, sulphur, and occasionally pockets of natural gas. The water is almost always hard, necessitating a water softener.

Inglewood
Inglewood, Cheltenham, and Terra Cotta now have their own communal well and water mains. The water is 17 grains hard and contains about 1ppm iron. Recommend a softener and carbon filter for chlorine removal. The softener may require occasional flushing with resin cleaner for the iron.

King City
King City water is approx. 15 grains hard and contains high amounts of iron and silicate-bound iron on two wells. Recommend a softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal. Periodical cleaning with resin-cleaner may be required for the softener. Iron filters are not effective for removal of silicate-bound iron. (Silicates are added to the water by the town to prevent the iron from staining. This usually doesn't work and merely prevents softeners from removing the iron.)

Kleinburg
Kleinburg is still on ground water. Approx. 17 grains hard and 1ppm iron. Recommend a softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal.

Limehouse
Limehouse, which includes country developments such as Ballantrae Homes, varies in hardness from 20 to 70 grains per gallon. (Extremely hard water) Other problems have been silt and sand turbidity and iron. The water should be tested to determine your requirements.

Mississauga
Mississauga water comes from Lake Ontario and is heavily chlorinated. One difference with Toronto is that the Mississauga frequently adds Ammonia to the water to bind the chlorine, forming a 'chloramine'. Chloramines have been shown to be harmful to people on pacemakers. Recommend carbon filtration and (or) reverse osmosis.

Newmarket
Roughly the same water as Aurora. Approx. 15 grains hard with no iron. Recommend a softener and carbon filtration for chlorine removal.

Nobleton
Nobleton water is 12 to 14 grains hard with some silicate bound iron. Recommend a softener with carbon filtration for chlorine removal. May need to clean iron stains occasionally. (Softener won't prevent iron stains.) Not enough iron to justify an iron filter.

Orangeville
Orangeville water is approx. 15 grains hard with little or no iron problems. Recommend a water softener with carbon filtration for chlorine removal.

Pottageville
The Pottageville area has experienced problems with iron bacteria, which can clog water treatment equipment, and leave a foul smell in the water. Tell-tale signs are slimy residues in toilet tanks. The solution is a 'Chlorination System'. Once installed leaves no residual chlorine, removes iron and sulphur, and kills bacteria. If there is any suspicion of this problem, your water should be tested.

Schomberg
Schomberg water is similar to Nobleton: approx 12 to 15 grains hard. Recommend a softener and carbon filtration to remove chlorine.

Toronto
Toronto water comes from Lake Ontario, and contains chlorine and well as trace chemical contamination from the Lake. These include PCB's, THM's and Dioxins. Long term exposure to THM's has been shown to cause an increased risk of colon and rectal cancer (Health and Welfare Canada study).
Toronto Star May 24/07: Toronto Water estimates 45,000 homes have lead connecting pipes running from the street main into their homes.

Recommend carbon filtration and (or) reverse osmosis.
